Chef James Sherwin returns for new pop-up restaurant series

A Shropshire chef, who became known for his regional pop-up restaurant events and a stint on a national TV cooking show, is returning to the popular pop-up format in Shrewsbury after a gap of two years.

James Sherwin has been invited by Ginger & Co, Shrewsbury’s newest independent coffee shop, to stage a series of pop-up restaurant events at the venue in June and July.

James burst onto the culinary scene in early 2014, when he successfully competed on Channel 4’s ‘The Taste’, hosted by Nigella Lawson, and set the region’s taste buds alight with his ‘James-in-a-space’ pop restaurants at venues across the Midlands.

James, known for his challenging flavour combinations and passion for cooking with seasonal local ingredients, is a regular chef-demonstrator at food festivals throughout Shropshire and the Midlands and is also the new sous chef at Shrewsbury’s House of the Rising Sun restaurant.

His first Ginger & Co pop-up, ‘Flavours of Shropshire’, will take place on Wednesday June 8, offering a seven-course taster menu focussing on spring and early summer Shropshire flavours. Further ‘pop-ups’ will follow at the coffee shop, in The Square, on June 22 and July 20.

“I love the springtime flavours of Shropshire, so it couldn’t be a better time of year to create a menu that captures the freshness of the season and the diversity of our wonderful county,” said James.

“It’s been quite a journey for me since my first pop-up nearly three years ago. I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from some amazing chefs and I’m hugely excited to be presenting a new series of pop-ups in my home town.”

Ginger & Co founders Sam and Kate Gwilliam said: “We’re passionate about great-tasting locally sourced ingredients, so we’re thrilled to secure James as our first pop-up guest chef. It’s going to be a very special evening for foodies and anyone looking to try something different.”

James, a self-taught chef, gave up his career as a paediatric nurse, to pursue his passion for cooking. His previous pop-ups brought him to the attention of Shrewsbury restaurant Henry Tudor House which invited him to become chef de partie under the tutelage of national award-winning executive chef Chris Conde, in 2014.

In March this year James joined the House of he Rising Sun as sous chef, working alongside head chef Liam Watton. Their first joint menu will launch in early June.

Tickets for the pop-up evenings are available from Ginger & Co. James Sherwin will be appearing on Shrewsbury Food Festival’s demonstration stage on Saturday June 25 at 4pm. Some of James’ recipes appear in the recently published Signature Chefs recipe book.
