Builder’s £1,000 donation helps ladies football club expansion

A ladies’ football club has scored a £1,000 donation from leading housebuilder Persimmon Homes West Midlands.

Shrewsbury Town Ladies FC made a successful bid to the builder’s Community Champions Fund and says the cash will help develop the club allowing it to run junior as well as adult teams.

Sean Evans, who applied on the club’s behalf, said: “Shrewsbury Town Ladies FC was formed in 2013 after originally folding in 2007.

“It is a self-funded organisation run by volunteers, though we receive a lot of support from Shrewsbury Town Football Club fans, but no financial reward through the club.

“All the money we raise ourselves through player sponsorship goes towards training sessions, equipment and developing the club further.

“Currently we are raising money for developing the club to expand the number of teams we have from one to potentially having teams from junior level through to our adult first team.

“Interest in the club from new players is growing stronger each season.”

Sean added: “We very much appreciate the support Persimmon Homes West Midland is giving us.”

Stephen Cleveley, sales director of Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “We are pleased to hear there is such a growing interest in women’s football in Shrewsbury.

“It is fantastic that we are able to support such a string community initiative and to hear the £1,000 donation could open the sport up to so many more juniors and adults.

He added: “Persimmon Homes West Midlands has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a difficult choice from so many worthy causes.

“If people were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
