Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft to 'Show Off' in Ludlow this October

This October sees the second exhibition for The Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft at the Harley Centre in Ludlow.

Held over the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October, the event, appropriately titled 'Showing Off', will feature over 30 designer makers from the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft as well as guest exhibitors from The Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen.

Those exhibiting at this free to enter autumn event will include Coalport potter and Shropshire Guild member Ralph Jandrell, and designer maker Jo Dewar from The Worcestershire Guild.

Ralph, whose workshop and studio is based in the picturesque Ironbridge Gorge at The Coalport China Museum, makes a unique range of hand decorated ceramics.

With his inspiration mainly coming from what he sees around him, Ralph lives and works in the Ironbridge Gorge. He said “there are trees everywhere - stacked up the sides of the gorge and along it as far as you can see.” Ralph continued “I like to think of my work as in a certain English tradition - echoes of English landscape paintings whilst trying to create a contemporary, relevant, desirable product for today”.

Ralph will be showing several new designs at 'Showing Off', including Magnolia and Bramble.

Whilst studying an arts foundation course at Worcester Technical College, Jo Dewar discovered a movement called ‘Arte Povera’. This was founded by impoverished Italian art students during the 60’s and they used recycled materials for their creations, one of which was wire. Jo said "I now have a passion for knitting and manipulating wire and this has evolved into making jewellery, jugs, teapots, plaques and candle holders with my work evolving all the time". Jo continued "this will be my 3rd 'Showing Off', and it's a show of really great quality".

Chair of the Shropshire Guild, and also exhibiting at 'Showing Off', Caroline Bennett said "'Showing Off' in October is a wonderful event. It gives the public a great opportunity to scout around for unusual and original gifts for the festive season, as well as appreciate the absolute quality of the designer makers from the region".

Ceramicist Caroline, who works from her home near Bridgnorth continued "we'll be having a huge variety of makers at this show, some of which will be demonstrating over the weekend".
This free to enter event is being held at the Harley Centre in Ludlow, across the whole weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October. 'Showing Off' is open from 10am – 5pm on Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday, admission is free.

The next event for The Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft is 'A Gorgeous Christmas' Contemporary Craft and Fine Food Fair at Enginuity, Ironbridge over the weekend of Saturday  17th and Sunday 19th of November.
