A Shrewsbury mum has launched a range of pretty leather toddler shoes that squeak and help parents keep track of their little ones while out-and-about.

Abigail Barker has set up Tiny Squeak, selling her range of soft leather shoes both through her own website and Compost and Gooseberry in Shrewsbury Market Hall.

The shoes are of a classic style but have padded support and come in a range of lovely colours. The little squeak in the heel makes them a hit with both toddlers, who love triggering the sound when they walk, and parents who are reassured by the security of being able to hear where their children are.

“The removeable squeak also encourages children to learn to walk heel-to-toe and helps build their confidence in walking,” says Abigail, who lives in Minsterley.

She and husband Richard came up with the idea for the business after buying a similar pair of shoes for their daughter, Sienna, now two, in Canada last year.

“We loved the design and it was only when we got home that we realised they squeaked. We thought they were a great idea. Searching for similar shoes in the UK we couldn’t find any, so I decided to develop my own range,” explained Abigail.

Sienna, now two, loves the shoes so much she has them in almost every colour.

“When I get her up from a sleep, her first words are usually shoes!” said Abigail.

And like most independent-minded toddlers Sienna doesn’t like holding her mum’s hand when out-and-about.

“I love the security aspect of the them. Hearing the squeaks I always know where she is,” said Abigail.

The range includes shoes, boots and sandals in sizes three to six, with leather uppers and inners. Abigail works with designers to come up with colour combinations and styles she likes.

And if all that squeaking drives parents mad, they can simply remove the squeak.

Sam Pooley, of Compost and Gooseberry, said: “We are so excited to be having such a unique and beautifully designed new product in the shop. We love the branding and think that TinySqueak will appeal to our yummy mummy customer base.”

“It’s a lovely shop where children can try the shoes before mum or dad purchase,” added Abigail.

She has also developed a Pipsqueak range of both leather and fabric soft-soled pram shoes. Her winter range includes faux fur leopard booties and accessories such as mini bomber and velvet animal hats.

Abigail is also available for Tiny Squeak parties in the Shropshire area. Her website address is For offers and competitions visit Tinysqueak on or on Twitter @TinySqueakShoes.
