Flaxmill Maltings Open Days 8th & 9th September

There will be further opportunities to visit the Flaxmill Maltings site during Heritage Open Days on September 8 & 9 between 10.00 am and 4.00pm each day.

Some 1,600 enjoyed similar events in May and this time there will be even more to see, learn about and enjoy.

Guided tours by expert volunteers will be available on request, including access to t
he top of the Silo for wonderful views over Shrewsbury. Following the great success last year a major attraction will be the Open Arts Exhibition with a pre-view, open to all, on Friday 7th from 6.00 – 8.00pm. There will be new interpretation displays and demos of Flax and Malting processes. ‘Compost Kids’ are providing Art and Craft workshops for children, plus there will be live music and refreshments will be available.

A new feature this year is that archaeologists will be demonstrating the smelting of Shropshire iron ore using a bloomery furnace whose origins can be traced back to circa 2000 years BC. The furnace will be fueled on charcoal produced at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm with the iron extracted at approximately 3.30 pm each day. Obviously, this is particularly relevant within the worlds first iron framed building.
