Shrewsbury asked to support local charity

Local, independent charity for older people, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is setting up a Shrewsbury Supporters Group.

Heather Osborne, the charity’s chief executive says:

‘As a local older people’s charity we provide a range of different services across Shropshire. We support 39 social centres for frail older people, each of which is run one day a week by a superb team of volunteers, we set up and promote activities for older people and we have a team of volunteers who each week visit over 300 older people in their own homes to provide companionship and perhaps help with errands like collecting prescriptions, posting letters and changing library books. We also provide advice, information and advocacy.

‘There are thousands of older people in Shropshire, who very rarely have contact with friends or family. The help we provide is often desperately important to the older person we are supporting.

‘The demand for our services is at a record high, we have long waiting lists for some services. We urgently need to increase our regular, unrestricted income so that we can continue to support older people who turn to us for help.’

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin already has a North Shropshire Supporters Group, which stages fundraising events which help to fund the charity’s work in the north of the county.

‘A small group of supporters have made a big difference by organising some fun events in north Shropshire. Events organised by the group include a fashion show, concerts and an antique valuation evening.’ adds Ms Osborne.

A public meeting about the Shrewsbury Supporters Group will be held at Central (Claremont Baptist Church), Shrewsbury on  Thursday 26th February – 5.30pm for 6pm, free drinks and nibbles will be served and the meeting will be finished by 6.45pm.
