Ticket sales for this year’s Shrewsbury Folk Festival are streaking ahead of last year with organisers expecting a surge in demand as earlybird prices come to an end on March 31.
The annual festival, held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at the West Mid Showground in Berwick Road, is a regular sell out and all the tickets were snapped more than two months before the event in 2014.
Organisers have said the sale of adult weekend tickets are well in excess of last year and they have already sold out of Friday and Saturday day tickets.
Festival director Alan Surtees said: “It is heartwarming for us to see ticket sales are so strong and that the majority are return visitors.
“We have a great line up this year reflecting British traditional and contemporary folk music along side world and North American artists but even if you’ve never heard of any of the acts, we’d encourage people to come along and enjoy the magic that is created at Shrewsbury every year.
“The joy of the festival is the sum of all its parts – it creates a wonderful atmosphere where people enjoy everything on offer or just relax and enjoy time with friends and family in a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.”
Mr Surtees added: “There is always a massive surge in ticket sales towards the end of earlybird pricing as people understandably want to get a bargain. But once all the adult weekend tickets are sold, there won’t be any more so our advice is to book early.”
The four-day event from August 28 to 31 will feature the Richard Thompson Electric Trio, Canadian folk royalty La Bottine Souriante, top Irish accordionist Sharon Shannon, Oysterband, Kate Rusby, John Jones & the Reluctant Ramblers, Peatbog Faeries, Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band, Mawkin, False Lights and festival patron Steve Knightley from Show of Hands.
Other artists on the bill include: O’Hooley & Tidow, world music duo Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, The Wilsons, The Young'uns, New Rope String Band, Ross Ainslie & Jarlath Henderson, The James Brothers, Lucy Ward, Patsy Reid, Jack Harris, The Willows, Gren Bartley, The Roaring Trowmen, Winter Wilson, Teacups, Fran McGillivray and Mike Burke, Granny’s Attic, Mary Humphries & Anahata, The Boundless Brothers and Paula Ryan.
Special performances will come from Oysterband frontman and festival patron John Jones with
The Oxford Girl show, and Folk Nations – a British Council musical collaboration featuring British and South Asian artists.
As usual, Shrewsbury will open its doors to a number of overseas artists with unique Australian group The Spooky Men’s Chorale making a welcome return. Canadian bands Ten Strings and a Goatskin and Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys have been signed up along with the Barra MacNeils and American Jonathan Byrd will be making a return after his 2012 debut won him a whole new army of fans.
The festival has four music stages, a dance tent, more than 100 workshops, a popular children's festival, a dedicated youth programme for 12 to 17-year-olds, onsite camping, a craft fair and food village.
Earlybird ticket prices last until March 31 and adult weekend tickets are £125 until then. Day tickets for Sunday and Monday start at £34 for adults.
Children under four go free and family tickets are available. Onsite camping is available to all weekend ticket holders at £25 per adult.
