Adventures In Alternative Cinema

Adventures in Alternative Cinema is a new project run by WEM TOWN HALL, that aims to engage young audiences in non-mainstream film.  By focusing on World Cinema, Documentary and Artist Moving Image, the aim is to broaden the horizons and experiences of tomorrow’s commissioners, film makers and audiences and get them hooked today. The project will feature regular screenings and events at Wem Town Hall and Old Market Hall, and will work in partnership with a wide variety of other venues and organisations across Shropshire, including the new Shrewsbury Museum, Mediamaker, and the Shropshire Screens 43 rural venues. After exploring each film genre for six weeks, the participants will design, produce and programme a three day Film Festival that will happen in July 2013.

So far, two groups of Young Programmers have been recruited from Shrewsbury & Wem, who will meet regularly to attend events, screenings and plan for the Summer Film Festival. This course is open to anyone who has an interest in non-mainstream film, and events and screenings will be free to participants of the programme.

This project offers so much more than film studies, it gives young people the opportunity to work with established professionals, and get involved in the efforts that go into promoting and organising a nationally recognised film festival.
