Ten successful years for Shropshire firm

When Gavin Jones “bit the bullet” to set up his own business at the age of just 22, his main thought was whether he could afford his next mortgage repayment.

Now, 10 years on, Shire Conservatories, based in Shrewsbury, is one of Shropshire’s success stories, with 12 full-time staff installing hundreds of windows, doors and conservatories across the county every year.

Gavin, who lives in St Martins with his wife and three children, said it had been a big decision to set up on his own back in 2003.

“It was certainly quite hairy,” he said. “I remember we had moved house on the Friday, were due to go on holiday on the Sunday, and I hadn’t been paid. You could say it was a rather stressful time!

“But I believed I was making the right decision, and the last 10 years have flown by. We made a conscious decision to grow steadily rather than rapidly over the years to ensure we maintained our excellent customer service and quality.

“We are still quite a young company in the grand scheme of things and we have lots of ambition to continue our growth.”

Gavin established Shire Conservatories after spotting a gap in the market and was originally based in a small office in Shrewsbury before moving to the current base of Harlescott Barns in 2003.

The firm installs conservatories, windows, doors, carports and canopies and has customers across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Gavin added: “We have not looked back, but I must admit we did not expect to achieve the success we have enjoyed so quickly.

“From the start we believed that it was important that we provided high quality products at realistic prices, as well as great customer service. For us that philosophy still exists and is at the heart of what we do at Shire Conservatories.

“It is a special anniversary for us and it has been nice to raise a toast to our success so far and for it to continue in the future.”
