Success for Shropshire Racing Team

A Shropshire bike shop owner has set his team on course to becoming one of the best clubs in the West Midlands after he won a major road race for the third time.

Mike Jones, 46, who owns family-run business Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, won The Wood & Loines Halesowen Road Race in Stourport-on-Severn on Sunday.

Winner in 2010 and again in 2011, Mr Jones has now completed a hat-trick of wins after he outsprinted fellow veteran Phil Mason after five laps of the Astley circuit in Worcestershire.

His result scored some major points for the Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team and will help it reach the top spots in the West Midlands Division.

“For a small club like us, that’s really good,” said Mr Jones, who is the Director Sportif for the elite team and a sponsor through Stan’s Cycles.

During the 70-mile race, Mr Jones averaged about 25 miles per hour.

“It’s the sort of course that suits me,” he said. “It’s very up and down and quite hard so it fits my type of racing. I’m quite experienced so I know when to go and when to stay back.

“Two riders broke away early on in the race and gained about a minute on our bunch.

“They held it for about 50 miles but towards the end of the race, six of us managed to bridge across to them.

“On the last climb, two of us broke away from the riders and that was about three miles from the finish.

“We managed to stay away until the end and then I outsprinted the other break-away rider to win the race.”

Fellow Paramount CRT rider Richard Watson also entered the race but had to be taken to hospital after another rider crashed and he was unable to avoid him.

“He was badly bruised and battered. It was on a 40 mile per hour descent. They slid over the road and it was quite nasty,” said Mr Jones.

“My son Elliot also rode in the race and was in the top 20.”

The previous weekend Mr Jones finished third overall in the Nigel Measom two-day weekend and on May 9, he finished second in round two of the Shropshire Road Race League.

Stuart Glover, a member of the Paramount Club Member, also celebrated success after he won a fourth category only race at the Sundorne Track in Shrewsbury, moving him up from a fourth Cat rider to a third Cat rider.

Ben Lawrence, managing director of insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence and Co, which sponsors the team, and who is the racing team manager, said he was thrilled with Paramount’s top position so early in the season.

“Paramount is doing tremendously well. Creating the elite racing team within the club has really pushed us to the top.

“It’s great they are inspired by what the team has already achieved and it’s encouraging other club members to raise their game.

“Each week Paramount CRT is celebrating more and more wins.”
