Spitfire possible for flypast during poignant sunset ceremony at RAF Cosford museum for gala ball

A glittering Centenary Charity Ball on August 30 at RAF Museum Cosford will commemorate the First World War and raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and RAF museum.

A champagne reception under the wings of the mighty Vulcan bomber and other legendary aircraft will be held in the museum’s National Cold War Exhibition.

Guests will watch a flypast during a poignant sunset ceremony with music from a military band.

A unique dining experience awaits guests in the Museum’s War Planes Hangar among an eye catching backdrop of aeroplanes as they dine surrounded by a remarkable panoramic view of some of the world’s most historic aircraft including a Hurricane, Lincoln Bomber and the world’s oldest Spitfire.

Entertainment will be provided by Shades of Blue from the RAF Regiment Band and other musical entertainment. Guest speaker for the evening is Wing Commander Andy Green OBE, an RAF fighter pilot and holder of the world land speed record who broke the sound barrier in 1997 hitting 763mph.

This is the fifth year the Gala Ball has been organised in its present successful format. Recent events have been a soaraway success and raised thousands of pounds for the RAF Benevolent Fund and RAF Museum Cosford.

The RAF Benevolent Fund gives vital support to past and present servicemen and women and their families in need of financial support through injury or ill health.

“This promises to be a unique and most enjoyable occasion. It is one of the most outstanding black tie events of the year and will truly be a most memorable evening,” said Shropshire businessman Graham Wynn OBE.

He urged the people of Shropshire and the West Midlands to support the black tie event, honour the RAF and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War while raising money for two worthy causes.

Organisers are also appealing for sponsors to take tables and offer prizes for a grand after dinner auction.

Karen Dixon, RAF Museum Cosford Corporate Events Manager says:

“Dining among Cosford’s legendary aircraft is a unique and special experience for guests and a must for anyone who enjoys high quality entertainment, supports the RAF, or has an interest in our aviation heritage.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Gala Ball in August and we are confident it will be as popular as ever.”
