Shrewsbury Market Hall launches late-night shopping on Wednesday November 20th

Shrewsbury’s indoor market will launch the first of its late-night Christmas shopping evenings on Wednesday November 20 on a musical high note with performances by a choir and a ukulele band.

The market hall, off Claremont Street, will open until 8.30pm as part of the Shrewsbury Christmas Cracker event and the town’s festive lights switch-on.

Shoppers will be able to browse the stalls for gift ideas and enjoy a bite to eat in the market’s restaurants and cafes accompanied by the Wilfred Owen School choir singing seasonal tunes and the foot-tapping melodies of the popular Bridgnorth Ukulele Band.

Outside the market hall, in Shoplatch, there will also be a series of fun rides for young children.

Site facilities manager Kate Gittins said: “Our first late-night shopping event launches our countdown to Christmas. The market will open late every Wednesday in the lead up to Christmas. Choirs will be singing for us on each of those evenings, bringing a wonderful festive atmosphere to the market hall.”

The Wilfred Owen School Choir will perform from 5 to 5.30pm inside the market hall on November 20 while the Bridgnorth Ukulele Band will perform outside in the market undercroft entrance from 6pm to 7.30pm.

The Christmas Cracker event in Shrewsbury town centre will include dance displays, choirs, street theatre and a German oompah band. The evening will culminate in a magical lantern parade into The Square for the official Christmas lights switch on at 6.30pm. The annual Tree of Light switch on will then take place in the Darwin Centre at 7pm.

The market hall is host to over 70 stalls selling items ranging from heritage bicycles, artisan chocolates and home furnishings to artisan cheeses, children’s toys and contemporary art.

It is home to Shrewsbury’s last remaining independent bookseller, a private art gallery, a boardgame specialist and a psychotherapist. It also boasts four traditional family butchers, an award-winning fishmonger, a North African restaurant and a new French crêperie.

The market will open until 6pm on all other Wednesdays leading up to Christmas, except for December 18 when it will stay open until 8pm and enjoy a party atmosphere.

Other special Christmas openings are Sunday December 22, 10am to 4pm, Monday December 23 until 6pm and Christmas Eve until 4pm.
