Shrewsbury Children's Bookfest MAY FESTIVAL 2014

The annual May Festival will run from Saturday 3rd May through to Monday 5th May 2014 at venues across Shrewsbury.

The very best authors, illustrators and all things to do with children's literature will be in Shrewsbury to enthuse and engage children and their families.

SATURDAY 3 MAY 2014:

CELEBRATE KIPPER THE DOG’S BIRTHDAY!

Age Range:  Age 3 - 6

Time:  10.30am – 11.15am

Venue:  Central – Shrewsbury Baptist Church, Claremont Street, Shrewsbury SY1 1QG

Description:  Come and meet your favourite little dog Kipper, created by Mick Inkpen, and help

him celebrate his birthday! Join in as wonderful storyteller Liz Fost leads us in stories, songs and activities.

Event Description:  Prepare to be wowed by the wonderful world of words. Get the gift of the gab and

add vim to your vocab as these lively linguists dip into dictionaries and provide top tips on becoming a word wizard. There’ll be lots of silly games in the playground of puns. A must for all budding young writers!

THE MARVELLOUS ROALD DAHL ADVENTURE IN THE SQUARE 

Time:  11am – 4pm

Venue: The Square, Shrewsbury

Event Description:  Join us for a Big, Marvellous, Whizzpopping day in the Square on Saturday 3 May 2014 where Roald Dahl's fantastic stories will be brought to life.

  • Storyteller, John Kirk will present Miss Agatha Trunchbull who will be covering the three R's (reading, writing and aggression with a capital ARRRGH!).  "Suitable for school aged worms and their parents."
  • Visit Wonka’s whipplescrumptious inventing room and have a go at designing extraordinary chocolate.
  • Bring a book to swap at the Grandparents’ Book Swap Bed.
  • Lie back in the Giant Peach with Sally Tonge and listen to some gobblefunk stories. 
  • Do some crafty activities with Fantastic Mr Fox. 
  • Watch local dance and theatre groups perform parts of Roald Dahl’s stories 
  • And in case of a sudden literary emergency, visit the Deborah Alma, EMERGENCY POET, the world’s only mobile poetic First Aid service administered from a poetry ambulance on prescription.  For ages 4 to 100++.  FEEL FREE TO DROP IN ON THIS FREE EVENT FROM 11am to 4pm.

Event Description:  In this entertaining and interactive talk, Rob Eastaway demonstrates the fun side

of maths for mums, dads and kids, with mind-reading tricks, curiosities and games that you can explore at home.  This is ideal for children aged 6+ (and parents and other adults too).

Event Description:  We’re going on a bear hunt… we’re not scared” Are you ready to go on your very

own Bear Hunt with us? Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this beloved picture book and go on your own adventure with a professional storyteller – dress up as a bear or bring your own to join in the action. Guaranteed to be loads of fun, with interactive reading, actions and giveaways, including your own bear ears to take home, this is a brilliant opportunity to join-in and ‘squelch-squerch’ and ‘stumble-trip’ through one of the nation’s favourite books.  Bring a picnic and join us after the story telling for a teddy bear’s picnic and some fun and games.
