Ruskim expands to cater for growing demand

An award-winning Shropshire company – one of the UK’s largest importer of seafood - has expanded to meet a growing local demand.
Ruskim Seafoods, which is based in Telford but has depots throughout the UK, has developed and launched a new brand called Ocean Classic to cater for domestic customers.

Director Kim Williamson explained that the firm had been based in Telford, employing local people for over 28 years and had a strong local profile due to its easily identifiable fleet of 90 refrigerated delivery vehicles.

“We are now amongst Europe’s leading importers, distributors and wholesalers of seafood, meat and poultry, supplying more than 5,000 trade outlets with products from five continents and employing over 200 staff.

“Recently we have seen an increase in demand from people who call at our head office on Stafford Park to buy fish and seafood in smaller quantities, so we have responded with a new online food brand, Ocean Classic, which can be purchased from us via our new website, allowing them 24 hour shopping and the convenience of being able to collect or take delivery at a time to suit them.

“I think more and more people are realising the health benefits of seafood and are also becoming more adventurous with their cooking so want different and unusual ingredients, which of course we can supply.

“The Ocean Classic website promotes a carefully selected variety, including rare types of seafood from freshwater king prawns and large scallops to halibut, and as the company as a whole stocks a huge range of food it is likely we can supply anything customers may need. We buy in bulk so prices are very competitive and every product comes in an ice-packed insulated box for delivery,” she said.

The new interactive Ocean Classic website has been developed in conjunction with Shrewsbury design and marketing agency Source and Colleen Harrison, of Leegomery, who was formerly an apprentice with Ruskim, has advised on the content of the site and is now employed to use her many social media skills to promote the brand.

“It is an easy-to-navigate site, with a clear choice of items, specific advice on seafood and recipes, various payment methods and even a weekly sea-based joke!” she said.

Ruskim is a family owned company which was established 30 years ago, originally supplying seafood to ethnic restaurants and take-away outlets and is also a former winner of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce export award.
