Rowers gain gold at regatta

Three teams of rowers from Shrewsbury School represented the West Midlands recently, with two of them bringing home gold.

The under-15 coxed four and coxed quad, as well as the under-16 eight, were selected to take part in the inter-regional regatta at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham.
Athol Hundermark, head of rowing at Shrewsbury School, said: “The under 16 eight raced well to win their heat and qualify fastest for their final where they got out of the blocks quickly and established an early lead, which the other crews were not able to contend with. We went on to win by a five-second margin and were delighted that the under-15 coxed four also won gold.

“The focus for all these crews will now turn to the National Schools' Regatta held on three days from May 24 in Nottingham.”

At another recent regatta, the girls quad from Shrewsbury School excelled themselves, despite this being their first outing in a competition.

They qualified for the final at the Wallingford Regatta, amongst the best junior crews in the country, beating Headington School, Molesey Boat Club and Weybridge in the process.

The crew is now preparing for Women's Henley and Henley Royal Regatta.
