Prestigious Theatre Project Puts Cleaning Company Centre Stage

A Midlands-based cleaning company has played a starring role in the renovation of one of the country’s most renowned theatres.

G-Force Steam was called upon to steam clean the exterior of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, which was refurbished and extended as part of a £189 million regeneration project involving the Library of Birmingham in Centenary Square, which reopened in September.

The specialist firm was given the task of cleaning all the concrete walls and fascias at the theatre, which is affectionately known amongst locals and industry insiders as ‘The Rep’. The company also cleaned the main sign on the top of the building, an element of the project that threw up its own particular challenges. “To ensure the entire exterior, including the sign at the top of The Rep, was cleaned effectively, we used a 52 metre high cherry picker so that we could get to each and every one of those ‘hard to reach’ areas,” Chris Garvey, Director of G-Force Steam, explained.

Founded in 1913 by Brian Jackson, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company has been based at Centenary Square since 1971, with the architect Graham Winteringham’s innovative theatre design winning a Royal Institute of British Architects award in 1972. The redevelopment project has seen The Rep and the Library of Birmingham amalgamated into one exciting venue, a new 300 seat auditorium built for theatre-goers, and a much-need refurbishment of the theatre’s backstage facilities given a much-needed makeover.

Rajinder Balley of Construction firm Interclass, one of the specialist sub-contractors working on the overhaul of the theatre, commented: “Chris and the team from G-Force Steam has done a first rate job. The interior of The Rep looks fantastic, but it was also important to ensure the exterior of the building was given a new lease of life, and the thorough steam clean did just that.”

G-Force Steam is one of the leading providers of environmentally-sound external cleaning solutions in the UK.  With a passion for excellence, quality and the environment, G-Force Steam uses the latest technology and equipment to ensure that the cleaning process is carried out in the most efficient manner.
