Places still available on life saving St John Ambulance course

St John Ambulance is urging people, including parents and grandparents, to join one of its training courses in life saving first aid in Shrewsbury later this month

The Essential first aid course at the charity’s centre in Priory Road on November 28 from 7pm to 10pm, will focus on a range of emergency situations involving adults, infants and children.

The evening session is designed to appeal to people who may work or have other daytime commitments such as looking after a family.

The training, costing just £25 + VAT, includes hands-on demonstrations of how to deal with a range of emergency situations, such as choking, severe bleeding and chest pains, along with step by step instructions on resuscitating someone who has stopped breathing.

The charity is also running an Emergency and basic first aid course at Priory Road on December 15 from 9am to 4pm.

Research by St John Ambulance showed that less than one in seven people in the West Midlands (14%*) know the basic skills that could be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

Shockingly more than half of parents (59%**) in the region lack the skills necessary to save their child in the event of a life-threatening accident. The statistic is the worst of any region in the country and compares with a national figure of 55%.

Sam Lukes, Community Training Co-ordinator for St John Ambulance in the West Midlands, said: ‘No-one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.

‘At a St John Ambulance training course you’ll learn to be the difference between life and death. You never know when you might need first aid, it could be at home, at work or just out and about.’

Sam added: ‘By holding the courses at such a low price we are hoping it will make the courses more accessible and encourage more people in the Shrewsbury area to learn the vital skills you need to increase your chances of helping to saving someone’s life.’
