New rounders league is a hit in Shrewsbury

A newly formed female rounders league in Shrewsbury has proved to be a great success. The league started in May 2013 and the last match was played on Tuesday 6th August. The league was set up by Shropshire Council’s leisure services team to help introduce more people to the sport of rounders. The league attracted a mix of players, including those who hadnt played since school as well as those who were new to rounders. Some players had already formed teams in order to join the league but other teams were made up from a number of individuals who wanted to return to the sport.

Practice sessions and league games were held at London Road Sports Centre on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer with only a couple of evenings cancelled due to the poor English summer weather!! Five teams made up the first league and “The A-Team” were crowned the overall winners of the first season.

In total, just over 65 ladies took part in the league and feedback was very positive. Players enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the chance to meet new people, as well as getting out in the sunshine and exercising!

The season was rounded off with a friendly presentation evening which was kindly hosted by The Peacock, Wenlock Road Shrewsbury after the final game. Players and umpires were treated to chip butties and the final results were revealed. As well as overall winners, top scorers and “player of the match” prizes were also presented.

Following on from the success of the first season, players from the league have now set up a committee and are already starting to plan for the 2014 rounders season. New teams will be welcome to join the 2014 season and interested players are encouraged to contact the current committee.
