More county schools reaping the benefits of Crossbar Coaching

More and more Shropshire schools are teaming up with Crossbar Coaching Education in Sport to enlist their expertise in delivering sport across the curriculum.

Crossbar has developed an excellent reputation since being formed nearly six years ago and their coaching team, led by director Gavin Cowan, a former footballer with both Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United, now teach sport at a host of county primary schools.

St Luke's Catholic Primary School at Trench, Telford and Oswestry's Woodside Primary School are the two latest schools to recruit the services of Crossbar Coaching who have more than 20 employees.

"It's great to now be involved with St Luke's School and Woodside School," said Gavin. "We work in a number of schools around the county and are always happy to hear from more.

"It's the start of a new academic year and it's been an exciting time for our coaches going back into schools. We're really excited that we've got new schools on board and are doing lots more hours within schools in terms of what we're doing in delivering sport across the curriculum."

Many of Crossbar's coaches have a background in professional sport.

"It's a case that our coaches can appear as mentors to children," added Gavin. "Long gone are the days of the bag of ball over the shoulder coaches.

"Now our coaches have become educators, role models, working within schools to deliver PE and making sure it's done to a high spec to aid physical literacy as well as life skills such as attitude and team work skills, so it's about trying to contribute and make their experience of sport adaptable to their every day life.

"We would like to think the children in the schools we work with are going to benefit from coaches who act as role models.

"We're now working towards our own internal curriculum that's working alongside the national curriculum to make sure that the experience of sport for pupils is the best it can be."

Crossbar Coaching also hold weekly football academies in Shrewsbury and Telford while they also run popular football and multi-sports courses for youngsters during the school holidays.
