Maltsters reunion at Shrewsbury Flax Mill Maltings

The Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings will welcome a group of former employees of the Maltings to an evening event on Tuesday 27th August at Shrewsbury Flax Mill Maltings. The event will offer former Maltsters the opportunity to have a final tour the South Silo before its demolition in early September.

Fay Bailey, Development Officer, Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings said, ‘We are delighted to have the opportunity to welcome back so many former Maltsters, engineers, drivers and technicians. This is a wonderful opportunity for old friends to meet and share their memories and for us to greatly enhance our knowledge of the history of this important building’.

After its time as a Light Infantry barracks in the Second World War the Ditherington Maltings was handed over to the Birmingham brewery Ansells who later became part of Allied Breweries. The site operated as a Maltings between 1897-1987.

Rachel Jordan, of the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings said ‘We hope the evening will spark many precious memories. The Friends will be recording and taking photographs during the evening. We look forward to sharing this record of the event via Shropshire Archives, Radio Shropshire and the Friends website’.
