Local clubs all set for Great British Tennis Weekend

Shropshire's great summer of tennis continues this Saturday and Sunday when a number of clubs around the county serve up free tennis as part of the fourth and final Great British Tennis Weekend of 2014.

Hundreds of clubs around the country signed up for the exciting initiative and it's all completely free as the LTA and Tennis Foundation push to get more people playing the sport more often.

Chris Hinks, the chairman of Tennis Shropshire, has been pleased with the response to the three previous weekend events while his organisation recently staged successful Tennis in the Square events in Shrewsbury and Ludlow plus Tennis in the Park at Attingham Park.

Now he hopes local people will be persuaded to pick up a racket and head to one of the local participating clubs this weekend.

He added: "We've had a great summer, very busy, and the events we've held have been very well supported so it's all been very successful.

"Everything has been geared up to trying to get more people to play tennis more often and it's pleasing to hear that clubs have reported good numbers joining them for their activities .

"We're looking forward to the final Great British Tennis Weekend of the year, an initiative that has been well supported by county clubs and proved to be very popular.

"Clubs around Shropshire are also holding summer camps so hopefully they will be equally well supported and people should contact their local clubs to find out more details."

Whitchurch's Hollies Club are offering free tennis at their Tarporley Road headquarters on both Saturday (2-6pm) and Sunday (3-5pm). They have a family fun day planned for Saturday with a number of games, drills and competitions before presenting cardio tennis and tennis xpress the following day.

Shifnal Tennis Club are throwing open their doors on Sunday between 10am and 5pm with mini tennis, family time, cardio tennis and over-50s tennis on offer.

Newport's Boughey Gardens Tennis Club are also involved on Sunday with local people having the chance to have a go at mini tennis, family fun tennis and tennis xpress from 5-6pm.
