Jane Ellison MP adds support to Get Shrewsbury Active campaign

A leading MP has given the Get Shrewsbury Active healthy living campaign a glowing endorsement as she vows to monitor its impact.

Jane Ellison MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, has contacted organisers of the campaign with a message of support.

She said she was fully behind the month-long campaign introduced by The Shrewsbury Club to encourage local people to pledge to undertake at least two and a half hours of activity each week.

Miss Ellison, MP for Battersea, said: "We recognise the importance of an active lifestyle in helping to improve the health of the nation.

"I'm delighted to support this great initiative designed to help get the people of Shrewsbury active.

"As a Government, we fully support initiatives that see private enterprise working in partnership with the public sector to improve the well being of the local community.

"I will be interested to see what impact Get Shrewsbury Active has."

Dave Courteen, the managing director of The Shrewsbury Club, said he was delighted to receive such a positive message of support from such a high profile MP.

Mr Courteen said: "It is really encouraging to receive such an unqualified message of support from a senior Government minister and we are now looking at how we can continue the campaign beyond this month."

"When we started Get Shrewsbury Active we wanted to involve as many partners as possible and it has been great to see the response the campaign has generated.

"We have been delighted that the local GP practice has supported us along with a number of private companies and key local individuals.

"It's so important that all of us who are involved in helping people live healthy lifestyles join together and present a compelling, coherent message about the value of maintaining regular activity.

"Get Shrewsbury Active has been building up a real momentum since we launched on January 6."
