Horticultural Society Launches Competition for Budding Photographers

The Shropshire Horticultural Society and camera chain Jessops have joined forces and are calling for budding, young photographers to get snapping for their People’s Prize Photography Competition 2013.

From bluebells in the back garden to pansies in the park, the competition encourages young people to share their views of ‘Shropshire in Bloom’ at this year’s Shrewsbury Flower Show on 9th and 10th August.

50 shortlisted entries across two classes will be displayed between the Dingle Pavilion and Severn Pavilion at the Flower Show. Visitors will be asked to vote for the top three in each class and winners will have their entries reproduced onto large format canvases. Winning entries will also be displayed on the Shropshire Horticultural Society website and in the window of Jessops’s store in Mardol, Shrewsbury.

Show Secretary Kim Leach said: “Photography is a fantastic hobby for young people and the theme ‘Shropshire in Bloom’ is a great way to show how beautiful our county looks, particularly during the summer months. We are looking forward to seeing the entries and working with Jessops to nurture young talent at the show.”

The competition is open to anyone up to the age of 18 and costs 50p for Junior Class entries (up to the age of 11) and £1 for Senior Class entries (up to the age of 18 years).

Entries for the competition must be submitted as prints to Photography Competition, Shropshire Horticultural Society, Quarry Lodge, Shrewsbury. SY1 1RN. The deadline for entries is 17th July 2013. 50 entries will be shortlisted prior to the Flower Show and final judging will take place during the Show.  Winners and runners-up will notified shortly after.
