Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings community arts project is flourishing!

The Friends launched Castlefields and Ditherington, Past, present and future in November 2012 to decorate the hoardings around the Flax Mill Maltings.

We have displayed over 20 boards and involved hundreds of people from across Shropshire in the project. Boards have been decorated by local schools, arts students, clubs and societies and individual artists and local residents.

The project was initiated by David Purslow, Head Teacher at Martin Wilson Primary and Trustee of the Friends. Art specialists from the Martin Wilson School have developed specialist workshops for their students and supported local schools including Harlescott Juniors and Shrewsbury Catholic Cathedral School to create this eye catching street art.

Richard Benjamin, Arts Co-ordinator for the Friends: “We have been delighted with the level of interest in the project. It has been fascinating to see the different art work produced and how people see Castlefield and Ditherington and the Flax Mill Maltings.”

The Friends have funded local artists to deliver workshops as part of the project, helping groups to develop their ideas and learn new techniques. All of the groups that meet at Flaxivity Youth Activity centre have been involved with the project as well as groups at Sundorne and the Grange.

Helena Williams, Positive Activities Co-ordinator – central: “Our young people really enjoyed the arts sessions led by Tracy Summerton. The art work they have produced tells the story of the Flaxivity Youth Activity Centre and displaying them will recognise their role in the local community.”

Do take a walk or drive along Ditherington Road and see the art work.
