Female cyclists brush up on bike repair skills

Female cyclists across Shropshire have been learning how to stay safe on the road and keep their bikes in tip top condition this week at a ladies only bike maintenance class.

Run by Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, the two hour practical class on Tuesday, October 14, was aimed at cyclists wanting to learn how to carry out their own roadside repairs.

During the session female cyclists learned about puncture repair, bike cleaning and maintenance and how to identify common mechanical problems.

The session, which was run by Stan’s service manager Ewan Caird, follows a boom in women’s cycling across the county and an increase in female membership of the Paramount Cycling Club, which is sponsored by Stan’s.

Mr Caird said: “On many occasions our female customers and club riders have commented about their lack of confidence when it comes to repairing and maintaining their bike.

“Many of them say if they run into difficulty whilst out riding they will phone home for a lift rather than attempting to repair a puncture or fix a mechanical problem.

“So we thought it might be helpful to host a class demonstrating key bike skills to help boost confidence among female riders.

“Those who attended were shown how to fix a puncture, replace an inner tube and change a wheel on a bike and were given tips on cleaning and other simple bike maintenance procedures such as how to check tyre pressure.

“These are essential skills for any cyclist and feedback from the class was very positive.

“All the ladies enjoyed getting stuck in and putting their new skills to the test on the bikes we had racked up in the service area and afterwards many said they would be attempting their own repairs and no longer phoning home, which is just fantastic.”

A total of 17 women attended the class and Mr Caird is now looking at the possibility of hosting another maintenance class for beginner cyclists, both male and female.
