Ex HMP Shrewsbury Prisoner Officer, Mick Corten is giving something back and progressing well with his Martial Arts career

Shropshire Shin-Gi-Tai (SSGT) Aikido is pleased to kick start this year with new discounted rates for forces personnel & NHS.

Sensei Corten who is 5th Dan & Instructor took early retirement after being a Prison Officer for 25 years at the Dana in Shrewsbury instead of being redeployed when it closed. He realises the importance of front line staff being able to defend themselves adequately when on duty and the club would like to reward employees of the various uniformed services, for their hard work, with a reduced training fee.

The Shrewsbury Aikido Club which is the longest running Aikido Club in Shrewsbury, (celebrating its 27th year in 2014) was expanded with the addition of Oswestry classes in April 2013 to form the SSGT.

Mick Corten said “After substantial investment on new training mats in 2014 which were purchased purely from club funds, as the club receives no funding from grants; the club is now in a great position to offer a safe, clean training environment, and is welcoming new students.”

“Aikido teaches you discipline and it is non-combative so it is about being able to fend off attackers and can be practiced by anyone irrespective of age, size or gender.  It will aid in development of fitness, confidence and good character in a fun, disciplined yet safe and healthy way.”

The club is offering a discounted rate of £5 per class (1.5 hours) which is available to employees of the following

Police

Armed Forces

HM Coast Guard

Fire

RNLI

Territorial Army

Ambulance & Paramedics

MOD

NHS

HM Prison Service

Highways Traffic Officers

“Those wishing to take up this offer will be required to show proof of eligible employment; anyone who is unsure about whether it is for them can come along and try a class for free before formally joining the club. Until you decide it is for you and purchase a Gi, all you need to wear is comfortable loose clothing suitable for sports and does not restrict movement.”

Usual mat fees are on a ‘pay as you go’ basis per class, non-forces rates are Adults £6.50, Juniors £5.00, so no expensive monthly memberships  and each student is required to take insurance at £16 per year from British Aikido Board via our club secretary, if continuing after free trial class.

Classes are Tuesday 7.45-9.15pm & Friday 7.30-9.00pm at Shrewsbury Sports Village, SY1 4RQ and Thursday 7.15-8.45pm at Oswestry Leisure Centre, SY11 4QB
