Event at The Mayfair

The chairman of Mayfair Community Centre in Church Stretton will be opening his extensive gardens in aid of two local charities later on this month, as he will be holding a ‘Garden Party’.

David Oliver, from Ryton, near Shrewsbury, and his wife Anita have spent the last few months giving their 3 acre grounds some extra special ‘tlc’ for the open garden event they will be holding on Saturday June 29th from 1.30-4pm.

A late Victorian gentleman’s residence sits proudly within the grounds where David and Anita have lived for the last 23 years. The outside space feature a wilderness garden, ‘cottage garden’ planting, fruit and vegetable beds, raised ponds, as well as 34 different varieties of clematis.

David and Anita will be donating the proceeds from their event to Mayfair Community Centre in Church Stretton and also the Church Stretton United Nations Association.

“I first became interested in gardening when I was 8 years old”, said David, “when my family first had a garden”. Nasturtiums and radishes were the first things that David grew.

As well as grounds to wander and enjoy, there will also be refreshments, greetings cards, plants, bric-a-brac and books for sale.

David continued “we have some very unusual trees here, including a 110 year old ‘punch bark’ wellington pine, lime and walnut trees”.

The Garden Party will be on Saturday June 29th from 1.30-4pm at The Orchard, Longnor Lane, Ryton, SY5 7LU and is courtesy of Mr and Mrs David Oliver.
