Bake Off judges ready for action

With the Great Shropshire Bake Off only a few weeks away, the judges have been announced and they have all been selected as being renowned experts in their field.

Home bakers and professionals from all over Shropshire are invited to take part in the formal baking heats, places are limited and the £40 entry fee will be donated to the Shropshire Rural Community Council, which is the sole beneficiary of the Bake Off.

Celebrity chef Marcus Bean will host the charity event at his Brompton Cookery School, near Shrewsbury, where he will be assisted in the judging by artisan baker Rob Swift, a 5th generation member of the family bakery in Ludlow, together with Jane Rushworth, of Clive, who runs specialist baking company Avocado Catering.

Elodie Home, community fundraiser for organisers Shropshire RCC said, “We are really excited to be holding our second Great Shropshire Bake Off as last year was a brilliant success, with over 600 people coming along to enjoy the atmosphere and admire and taste the hundreds of cakes and pastries following 100 entries for the formal and general bake-off categories.

“This year, we have got even more activities planned for everyone to enjoy, so we are inviting people to enter cakes or simply come along and enjoy a great day out for all the family and raise money for our charity at the same time.

“The main marquee will house the general Bake Off event where anyone is encouraged to bring along their home made cakes, pastries and biscuits for judging by an expert panel. It’s also the venue for a pop-up tearoom, a children’s cookery area, demonstrations from Shropshire’s best chefs and homemade refreshments. Sam Gray from Middle Farm will also be bringing her piglets along for the day.”

Marcus commented: “The Bake Off is a great family day out, there will be lots to do, plenty too eat, including some gorgeous cake of course, and all this is in aid of a really good cause.”

Jane Rushworth added: “Baking is my passion so I am delighted to have been invited to help judge this great event and living in rural area I am well aware of the essential work that organisations like Shropshire RCC carry out in the community.

“This promises to be a fun and exciting day for young and old bakers alike so I am really looking forward to being part of the judging team.”
