Great News for Young People in Shrewsbury

Four years ago the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings set up Flaxivity as an activity centre for young people in the old Salop Glass building in Spring Gardens.  It has a large Skate Park hall with ramps and half-pipe alongside a hall used for other youth activities.  Local youth groups have used the centre including one that I set up on Tuesday nights.

Unfortunately I have been unable to operate the Tuesday sessions since last July but now we are re-opening.

The great news is the Friends have been successful with a significant bid to the People’s Health Trust and are able to provide youth activities on Tuesday again and a wide range of community based activities over the next 2 years.

To support our youth activities we have been able to appoint RAMPED to work with us.  They are a highly qualified and experienced group who specialize in alternative sports like BMX, Skateboarding, Rollerblading & Scootering as well as the full range of more traditional youth activities.

Their three fully qualified youth workers will provide training, advice and guidance to those wishing to use the extensive ramp facilities at Flaxivity while supporting young people involved in other interests at the sessions.

Please see their website:-  http://ramped.org.uk/

We are open 6.30 – 8.30 on Tuesdays each week through to the school holidays and then will be offering other sessions over the summer along with events in the community over the next 2 years.  Age range is 10 – 16 years and there have traditionally been equal numbers of males and females in a friendly, safe and positive environment.

In recent years council cuts have meant that many youth activities have been curtailed so it is particularly pleasing that the Friends have gained this funding and are able to offer these great services for young people.
