Shrewsbury Touch Rugby Tournament

Shrewsbury rugby club hosted its first ever touch rugby tournament on Tuesday 16th December. Four teams played in a driving rain and poor ground conditions in a round robin format. Each team played three 20 minute games.  The teams made where made up of two teams from Newport and two teams from Shrewsbury totalling over thirty players, covering a wide range of ages and ability.  Teams where made up of six players with a number subs available.

Games where all played at pace, and although the weather was poor this did not dampen the players enthusiasm. The first round was Newport’s with Newport A winning 5-1 over Shrewsbury A and Newport B winning 4-0 over Shrewsbury.  Honours where reversed in the second round with Shrewsbury a beating Newport B 3-2 and Shrewsbury B beating Newport A 3-2. The final round saw Newport A beating Newport B 4-2 and Shrewsbury A beating Shrewsbury B 3-2. So after a well fort, competitive and very enjoyable contest Newport A where crowned the overall winners. At which point the teams retried to the club house for some hot food and a welcome drink. The inaugural event was seen as a great success with organiser Chris Child saying ‘ hopefully this is the first of many such events to held at Shrewsbury Rugby Club’ he added ‘touch rugby is a fantastic way to play minimal contract rugby, making it available to all while still maintaining the games core values’

Touch rugby is a non contract version of rugby suitable for all ages, male and female. No previous rugby experience is required to play and it’s a great way to keep fit. Shrewsbury Rugby Club holds a touch session every Tuesday evening from 19:00. The next session will be Tuesday 6th January, new players always welcome.
