‘Simply amazing’ opportunity: Young Poets to support Poet Laureate at Theatre Severn

Two lucky pupils at Adam’s Grammar School have been given the once in a lifetime opportunity to support the world renowned wordsmith and poet laureate Carol Anne Duffy when she plays at Theatre Severn later this month.

Chosen by local poet Liz Lefroy, who will also be performing at the event, Oliver Smith and Lucy Cunningham were chosen by Liz from Adam’s Grammar School in Newport, where she is currently the poet in residence.

Head of English Natalie White said ‘Liz has been an inspiration for the pupils. She not only leads writing workshops here but also regularly invites the writers to read their work in public at Shrewsbury’s ‘Eat Up’s Open Mic. Liz also works individually with pupils to draw out their talent as impressive writers.’

The Theatre Severn event is being held in conjunction with Wenlock Books and the Wenlock Poetry Festival, which Carole Anne Duffy is the founding patron of. Gillian Clarke is the national poet of Wales and is also a founding member of the festival.

When asked about the upcoming performance pupil Oliver said “I would never have imagined this opportunity would come about; my writing is in its junior years so I hope this experience will improve my performance skills. Not only that but to be performing with poets who I have admired for a long time, it’s simply amazing.”

Fellow winner Lucy added “This opportunity was a complete surprise and I’m really excited to share my work with other poets, especially Gillian Clarke whose writing I have loved since discovering her poem ‘My Box’. By being involved I’m hoping to inspire others to write and experience the joy of poetry.”

Tickets for Carol Anne Duffy, Gillian Clarke and Liz Lefroy are available by contacting the venue’s Box Office on 01743 281 281 www.theatresevern.co.uk . The performance is on Monday November 10th and starts at 7pm.
