St John Ambulance introduces special offer for training courses at Shropshire venues

St John Ambulance has launched a special discount for Shropshire businesses to encourage more organisations to improve their workforce’s first aid and health and safety skills.

The training arm of the charity is offering 20 per cent off courses at its centre in Priory Road, Shrewsbury, or at the Ramada Hotel in Telford for all courses booked and attended before 31 December 2014.

Courses available at the two Shropshire venues include the three day First Aid at Work qualification, Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and Fire Marshal courses. It also runs annual refresher courses, a one day Emergency First Aid at Work and specialist Paediatric First Aid course.

The drive to improve skills in the county has been supported by two Shropshire businesses which use St John Ambulance for its training.

Craig Cheadle, an administrator at Sunlight Services in Shrewsbury, said: ‘While we try to minimise the risks through diligent health and safety procedures, we operate an industrial laundry and the equipment we use can cause injuries if not used correctly.

‘Common accidents include burns and minor cuts, so we want our staff to know what to do if a colleague is injured and needs assistance. This is why we invest in first aid training for our staff, and ensure there is ample cover across shifts. We use St John Ambulance for our training as it's high quality and their training centre is local to us.’

Jill Clarke, from FB Heliservices in Shawbury, said: ‘We now have almost 40 staff in our Shawbury facility that have been trained in life saving first aid skills by St John Ambulance.

‘Because we are based on an RAF site and we work with helicopters the working environment is high risk, so it’s really important that staff have the knowhow to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.’

Jill added: ‘Some members of staff put their skills to the test recently when another employee collapsed onsite – they were able to react quickly, read the situation and ensure our colleague received the treatment he needed. These really are skills for life.’

John Cavanagh, Regional Director of St John Ambulance’s Commercial Training Division, said: ‘Shropshire is a thriving county for businesses. Our aim is to help them train their workforce in first aid and health and safety so they can be productive and minimise time lost through injury and illness.

‘But first aid is not only crucial in the workplace – we have numerous examples of people who have been sent on workplace first aid courses only to find their knowledge has helped them to save the life of a family member or act confidently in an emergency in their community.’
