Drapers Hall launches a new look

A Shrewsbury restaurant is celebrating a new chapter in its history with a new look and a contemporary-styled tapas and cocktail bar.

Drapers Hall restaurant and boutique hotel, in St Marys Place, which occupies one of the town’s finest timber-framed buildings, has undergone a major refurbishment.

The biggest change has been the transformation of the old bar area into a modern tapas and cocktail bar that is open to both diners and non-diners alike. Other additions include a relaxing lounge area, distinctive new branding and new menus.

Chef-patron Nigel Huxley, who has run the business with his wife and business partner Sharon since 2000, said: “This is an exciting new chapter for us.

“The tapas and cocktail bar adds a whole new dimension to Drapers as a new destination in town where people can come to enjoy a drink in unique surroundings. We’re particularly excited about our brand new tapas and cocktail menus.

“The restaurant will continue as it’s always done, although we’ve moved with the fashion for more relaxed dining and introduced a bar menu and a greater choice of steak and grill dishes alongside our a la carte menu.”

The refurbishment has resulted in the creation of new jobs, with Drapers Hall currently recruiting new staff.

The venue, which has been awarded two AA rosettes for its food and has six AA five-star rated boutique bedrooms, is housed in the old Shrewsbury drapers’ guildhall dating from the 15th century.

The new bar has been given a fashionable make-over using Brazilian marble, glass mirrors, natural hide upholstery and traditional cocktail ‘poseur’ tables that create a complementary contrast to the hall’s wealth of old features, including 17th century oak panelling and furniture.

The restaurant also specialises in private dining and bespoke wedding and party celebrations.
