Jazz stars to perform at Hive

A Shropshire entertainment venue is preparing to host one of the UK jazz scene's biggest names this weekend.

On Saturday evening, the Chris Gumbley Quintet will take to the stage at the Hive on Belmont, as part of the Shrewsbury Jazz Network's regular series of concerts at the intimate venue.

Shrewsbury Jazz Network are delighted to welcome back the Chris Gumbley Quintet with music that represents the joyous, soulful and rhythmic 1955 to 1960s development of bebop. The quintet specialises in the music of the legendary alto saxophonist Julian Cannonball Adderley - and Chris Gumbley’s music as a player, composer and educator is internationally acclaimed. His skill in interpreting Cannon’s music ensures that its beauty is clearly communicated.

Many of Cannon’s compositions and those of his brother trumpeter Nat have melodies that will be familiar and improvisations will reveal the quintet’s exceptional musical talent. Organisers from the Jazz Network claim that the event will offer the audience compelling listening.

Chris has added some new classics to the repertoire for this particular occasion including one of Cannnon’s hottest titles.

Tickets for the concert on Saturday July 13, are priced at £12, with under 16s costing £6. Members of the Shrewsbury Jazz Network can enter for £10. The event will start at 8pm with doors and bar opening from 7:30pm.

Habib Malik-Mansell from the Hive said "Chris Gumbley and his quintet went down extremely well when they last performed at the venue - and I know the Jazz Network are looking forward to their return this weekend. People certainly should consider coming along and making the most of the chance to see top quality live jazz at its best!"
