Historic Shropshire hotel launches campaign to improve tourism in England

A historic hotel in Shropshire has launched a campaign to get people enjoying the great outdoors and great food of the county.

As part of English Tourism Week, which runs until Sunday (March 22, from March 14), bosses at the Buckatree Hall Hotel at the foot of the Wrekin have begun a Twitter hashtag asking #whythatwalk.

They want county residents and visitors to reminisce about their traditional Boxing Day or New Years Eve walks up the Wrekin, or any other county walks.

General Manager Wayne Jenson said: “English Tourism Week is a great opportunity for us to show off all that is great about Shropshire.

“As our historic, family-run, hotel is located right at the foot of the Wrekin, we want to make the most of it.

“We have kicked off the campaign by tweeting our favorite walk with the #whythatwalk hashtag and we want to hear all about other people’s.”

Tweets about Shropshire so far include walkers who go up the Wrekin on New Years Day as a tradition to start the new year and walkers who enjoy Carding Mill Valley so children can play in the streams.

Mr Jenson added: “The food of Shropshire is another thing to shout about and we also ran a competition where one lucky guest has chosen their favorite Shropshire dish which will be served on the menu at the hotel.
“The winning entry was from Andrew Constable who chose a faggot recipe.

“We are really looking forward to offering this to our guests but we also still welcome any other ideas for favourite Shropshire dishes and we hope to introduce more onto the menu in the future.”

Last year the mayors of Telford and Wellington went to the award winning hotel to do a day’s work experience as a way to mark English Tourism Week.

This year the hotel have taken their celebrations online as a way to encourage more people to celebrate all there is to visit and enjoy in England.

“It is a great national celebration and we can’t wait to mark it again,” Mr Jenson said.

“We want to get as many people involved through social media as possible and everyone talking about the beauty of Shropshire.

“We need to spread the word that Shropshire is a great place to visit.”

The hotel has an 80-cover restaurant, a 50-cover bar and a 200-capacity function room for weddings, awards ceremonies and events.
